Fisher, I.; Kastl, G.; Sathasivan, A., (2014) Comparison of single and multiple dosing of chlorine for water distribution systems. AWA Water Journal. In press.
Adding chlorine to disinfect drinking water may be in one dose or several doses along distribution systems. Mathematical models are useful to compare the effects of single and multiple dosing in terms of decay of the chlorine and formation of undesirable by-products such as trihalomethanes, THM.
An accurate two-reactant model of bulk-water decay shows that it is better for water quality to use multiple doses than a single dose of chlorine. Clearly, the findings are consistent with what we know about the reactions of chlorine with dissolved organic compounds in water.
Further modelling with surface and blends of desalinated water was also an effective tool in comparison of single and multiple doses of chlorine for drinking water.
The findings are important to practitioners in water authorities, and advance innovative mathematical models of water quality.
